Toro Muerto Boulder
Field Petroglyphs in Majes Valley
Toro Muerto is a
large boulder field in the Majes Vallye desert overlooking the
floodplain of the river Majes (Colca) to the east.
It is located some 150km west of Arequipa. It is
said that there are more than 5000 engraved boulders
at this site and no complete survey has yet been
performed. The site is
officially protected, but many stones, especially
those near the 'entrance' are severely damaged.
With no
supervision, continuing loss s to be expected. Most characteristic
of the petroglyphs are the "dancers" that
occur singly, in pairs and in rows. The figures
designed using
zigzag-shapes. Zigzags and straight lines are
a typical feature of Toro Muerto.

Most characteristic of the
Toro Muerto pertoglyphs are the so-called 'dancers' that
occur singly, in pairs and in rows. Here is a part of a
row of four 'dancers' that clearly show the possibly
masked faces with 'tears' from the eyes and with plumes
or feathers. The figures basically are zigzag-shaped.
Zigzags and straight lines are another specific feature
of Toro Muerto. Several form 'walls of lines', sometimes
one or two meters high.
